Minority Report 2070

Minority Report 2070 is an international, design-driven teaching and research format that explores future societal challenges through the lens of speculative design and foresight methods. Inspired by scenario thinking, the project invites students from different cultural and academic contexts to imagine futures shaped by global transformations such as climate change, migration, and technological disruption.

Each edition of the project is framed by a thematic lens for the year 2070 – for example:

  • Climate Migration & Conviviality: exploring how mass displacement might reshape societies and how design can foster solidarity and shared living rather than division.

  • Social, cultural, and political shifts: examining how future societies might deal with issues of justice, identity, and ecological responsibility.

Aims and Approach:

  • To equip students with tools to think critically about the future beyond linear predictions.

  • To use Dator’s scenario archetypes and other foresight frameworks to explore multiple possible futures.

  • To encourage design responses that are not only speculative but also interventions for more humane, fair, and livable futures.

  • To provide an international and interdisciplinary platform where students from universities (California State University, San Francisco, and TH Mannheim) collaborate, debate, and co-create.

Output:
Students work in teams to develop speculative concepts, artefacts, or narratives that function as “minority reports” – alternative future visions that challenge mainstream narratives and open up space for discussion and reflection.

Core Idea:
By 2070, humanity may face profound disruptions. The question is not only what will happen, but how we want to live together. Minority Report 2070 positions design as a cultural practice that can inspire imagination, provoke debate, and shape more just futures.
